Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
EKU Facilities Services is committed to environmental stewardship and recycling. With programs like the collection of Universal Waste Batteries or, Cans for Habitat, EKU is a model in recycling for other regional universities and recycling within our community.
EKU is now accepting cell phone and MP3 batteries (nickel cadmium, alkaline, mercury, nickel metal hydride and lead acid), consumer batteries (AAA through D) and any other small batteries. Ask for the Universal Waste Battery pre-printed envelope from your building supervisors or residence hall advisors to dispose your used batteries. If you have questions regarding the Universal Waste Battery Program or recycling questions in general, click the following links; David L. Williams or Randy Wilson or phone 859.622.2966.
Facilities Services is currently recycling the following items from classrooms, offices and residence halls on the Richmond campus:
- universal waste batteries
- corrugated cardboard
- office paper
- magazines
- textbooks
- newspapers
- phone books
- notebook paper
- gift-wrap
- empty pizza boxes
- file folders
- envelopes
- plastic bottles, milk jugs and aluminum cans
- cell phones
- ink-jet cartridges
Please do not dispose plastic wrap, Styrofoam, candy wrappers, packing materials, cereal boxes, beer/soda cartons, tissues, paper towels, manila envelopes, food/containers, personal hygiene items, or medical waste in designated recycling containers.
Habitat for Humanity of Madison County is one not-for-profit organization that reaps the rewards of EKU'S environmental stewardship. In partnership with EKU, the cities of Berea and Richmond, local churches, businesses, and individuals, they have donated enough cans to nearly build one Habitat home.
So, please take the extra moment or those extra steps to recycle rather throw away. Remember that your recycled aluminum cans help build affordable housing. Plastic bottles are recycled into playground equipment, while captured waste batteries eliminates hazardous landfill waste.
